Vijayawada: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new terminal building at Vijayawada airport in Andhra Pradesh on January 12. The airport will cater to air services to the city of Amaravati, the new upcoming capital of Andhra Pradesh.

A senior Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said that the distance between Amaravati and the airport at Vijayawada is close to 45 kilometres, for which an eight lane road is also being constructed connected to link both the cities which would reduce the travel time.

The AAI official said that the new airport terminal building at Vijayawada airport will offer to enhance passenger capacity and wider space inside the airport for parking aircraft besides other infrastructure upgrades.

The cities of Guntur and Vijayawada are the major nearby cities to the state capital and Amaravati is the seat of governance of Andhra Pradesh. It is located on the southern banks of the Krishna river in Guntur district.

On the other hand, the government will inaugurate its first RCS (Regional Connectivity Scheme) flight on December 12 on Delhi-Bhatinda route.

State-run Air India’s regional arm, Alliance Air (using its small bodied ATR-72 aircraft) will kickstart the service under the government’s ambitious RCS scheme meant to connect remote and other areas not having air connectivity.

The Alliance will also fly to Kanpur and Pantnagar also around the same time, said an AAI official.
